Silent Log Source Alerts

Silent Log Source alerts can be used to alert personnel if specific data sources stop sending data for a configurable amount of time. A log source that has not sent data for a specified amount of time is referred to as a “silent log source.”

To configure a Silent Log Source alert, from the Dashboard:

  1. Click the Administration cog in the lower-left hand corner of the screen.

  2. In the Overview section, click Alert Manager.
    The Alert Manager page appears.

  3. From the Alerts tab, click Add Alert.
    The Alert type drop-down appears.

  4. Select Silent Log Source.
The Silent Log Source Alert configuration panel appears on the right.

  5. Enter a unique Alert Name.

  6. Optionally, enter a Description for the alert.

  7. Click the Select Distribution Profile button.
The Select Distribution Profiles pop-up appears.

For more information about creating and selecting distribution profiles, see the Alert Manager topic.

  1. Select one or more distribution profiles to associate with the alert.

  2. Click Confirm.

  3. In the Send Alert After field, configure a time threshold.
This is the amount of time that must elapse without seeing a new log from the monitored data source(s) before an alert is sent.
For example, the default is to send an alert after a log source has been silent for 5 minutes.

  4. Optionally, check the Repeat Alert checkbox.
    The Repeat Alert options appear:

    1. In the Repeat Alert Every field, enter a time interval.
This is how often the alert will be resent if the log source(s) that initially triggered the alert continue to not send new data.

    2. In the Stop Alert After field, enter a time limit.
This is the amount of time that the repeat alerts can be sent before the system stops sending alerts, even if the monitored source(s) continue to be silent.

  5. Click the Select Log Sources button.
The Select Log Source pop-up appears.

  6. Select one or more log sources that should be included for this alert.
The alert will trigger whenever any of the selected log sources remain silent for the configured amount of time.

  7. Once all desired sources have been selected, click Confirm.

  8. Click Save.
The Silent Log Source alert is created successfully and added to the Alerts tab.
